Ruth Munce's Biography
Ruth Munce was born Ruth Glover Hill, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, who died when she was just two years old. Her mother supported her young family through the writing of Christian novels, and instilled in Ruth a love for the Bible, as well as a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
After the death of her own husband of 24 years, Ruth found herself alone, nearing 50 years of age and with two young sons. Undaunted, and fully trusting God, she picked up her mother's successful writing career, as well as wrote a textbook on the book of Genesis.
Moving to the St. Petersburg area in 1948, she began teaching a Bible Study for students across the street from St. Petersburg High School. But seeing no educational alternative for Christian families in Pinellas County, she began to dream of opening a private school where "God would be the sum of the equation, the Bible a textbook."
She spent summers studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College in Illinios. Then without the backing of an affiliated church, she got a loan from a bank and supervised the construction of four classrooms on a former 13 acre farm just off Seminole Boulevard.
Opening in 1953, and named after her mother, the Grace Livingston Memorial School later became known as Keswick Christian School. Ruth went on to become its principal for 15 years, and often dipped into her literary earnings to meet the school's payroll during the early, difficult days. At one time, she even sold her engagement ring in order to pay the bills.
The school grew and prospered. Even after leaving the school in capable hands, Ruth continued her unceasing service to Christ. At the age of 70, she undertook an eight year term teaching at the Nirobi Bible Institute in Kenya. Ater returning to the United States, she continued to teach well into her 90's.
Departing to be with her Savior at the age of 103, she not only left a school that ensures her dream of Christian education for the Christian families of Pinellas County, but also a legacy....an inspiration....and an example for all of us.
As you listen to the teachings of Ruth H. Munce, may your heart be challenged and your faith strengthened. To God be the glory great things He has done!
